What Check The Menus does with your information

Effective 1 September 2026
Applies to the Check The Menus mobile app (Android and iOS) and checkthemenus.com

The short version. You don’t need an account to browse, search, favourite, or leave a review. The app collects the minimum needed to show restaurants near you and to keep reviews honest. Nothing is sold, and there is no advertising or cross-app tracking.

Check The Menus is a restaurant discovery app for Antigua & Barbuda, and a companion to the directory at checkthemenus.com. This page explains what the app collects, why, where it goes, and the choices you have.

1. What the app collects

  • Location — nearby search & directions. Only if you allow it, and only while the app is open — never in the background. Your coordinates are used on your device to sort listings and centre the map, and to hand off to your maps app for directions. They are not stored on any server.
  • Review & rating — public listing content. The star rating, review text, the display name you type (not verified against any identity, because there are no diner accounts), and an optional photo you attach. Reviews are public — shown to anyone viewing that restaurant, in the app and on checkthemenus.com.
  • A random device id — spam limiting. The app generates a random token and stores it on your device to limit each install to one review per restaurant and one report per review. It is not a hardware identifier, is not linked to your name or your Google/Apple account, and resets if you reinstall the app.
  • A review report you submit — moderation only. If you tap Report on a review, we store the device id above together with any reason you choose to type, so we can review the report. Report content is not shown publicly.
  • Notification reminders — stays on your device. If you turn on notifications, the app schedules reminders directly on your device using your phone’s own notification system. No push token or notification data is sent to, or stored on, any Check The Menus server today. A feature that lets you follow a specific restaurant and be notified when it posts an update is planned but not yet active; if we turn it on, this policy will be updated first, since it will then involve storing a push token as described in Section 3.
  • Favourites & saved name — on device only. Restaurants you star and the name you last used on a review are kept only on your device and are never sent to a server.

2. What it doesn’t collect

No sign-up, and no email, phone number, or payment details are asked for to use the diner side of the app. There is no advertising SDK, no analytics profile that follows you between apps or sites, and no sale or sharing of data with advertisers or data brokers.

  • No accounts required
  • No ad tracking
  • No data sales

3. Who the data goes to

  • Supabase — stores reviews, review photos, and (for restaurant owners only) business account and reply data. Traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
  • Google Maps — renders the map and calculates a route when you tap “Directions.”
  • checkthemenus.com — supplies the public listing data (name, address, hours, photos) shown in the app, from our own website’s directory. It’s also where restaurant owners create and manage their business account — that sign-up and management flow happens on the website, not inside this app.
  • Expo — powers the on-device notification reminders described above. As of this policy’s date, notifications are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device; no push token is currently registered with, or sent to, any server.

4. Restaurant owner accounts & replies

Restaurant owners create a business account (email and password) on checkthemenus.com, not inside the mobile app, to manage a listing, reply to reviews, and see basic engagement counts for their own restaurant. This is optional and separate from browsing or reviewing as a diner. Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider and are never stored or visible to us in plain text. A reply an owner posts to a review is public content, shown to anyone viewing that review in the app, the same as the review itself.

5. Your choices

  • Location can be turned off any time in your device’s app-permission settings. Search and browsing still work without it.
  • Photo access is only requested at the moment you choose to attach a photo to a review.
  • Notifications can be turned off in the app’s Profile tab or in system settings at any time.
  • Reporting a review you believe is fake, abusive, or violates our guidelines: use the Report option on the review. This does not remove it automatically — we review reports and act at our discretion.
  • Removing a review or your data: because no account is tied to reviews, contact us with the restaurant name and the review text and we will remove it.

6. Children

Check The Menus is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from young children.

7. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the effective date at the top of this page is updated. Material changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
